Is there anything that is particularly good at removing (from cloth) the sort of UV-active brighteners found in most detergents?

Well, the idea would be to have better control over what glows and what doesn't glow. I have no idea what white cotton looks like under black light without brighteners (but white is surely the best background for fluorescent dyes and paints), and as others have mentioned, even dark colors pick up more glow than they ought to have, both from the brightener itself and from "bright lint."
