  • OK.. maybe I was not too clear in the update thread, my bad

BlacklightBall2007 summary as of Thursday, May 24th (real people calander)

    1. Venue
We are not booked into a venue yet.

I did get A final price from Our San Jose Location today. $2300 dollars. 1/2 deposit 1/2 on day of event before start.
~ We provide porta potties (about $300)
~we provide enough security to make sure people do not mess with the airplains and stuff.

In my opinion, this is a expensive rental fee considering that the space comes with no built in sound, lights, bathrooms. It is a great space but it cost us some money to be there and without a few months of advanced ticket sales and promotion, I am worried if over two hundred people will purchase tickets to attend, especially down in san Jose.

In the city, on any given night, a hundred same day attentions can make it financtially safer, but in the south bay, people have to go out of their way to attend.

Danhauz so far has not yet responded to whether or not they would reduce their rental fee's and chances are that is becuase they won't. Which means that renatl fee is between $2300 and $2600 depending on how much room they (he) caharges us for.

Given how much time we have to promote the evnt and draw in enough ticket sales, I'd prefer to stay in the city with a regular supply of partyseekers. I hate doing this, but am afraid of getting pinched with a thousand dollar rental bill that will keep my kids from preschool this year.

Then there is the question of interest. So far, we have a crew of about 10 committed people.
I know we will get more, but it is not a very good start for something that will demand a good turnout. I hate having to make judgments based on money, but this the case right now. The Burningman community I know seems to be in transition. The artist are moving away from community events and party people are staying close to certain DJ's and regular (santioned) events and venues. I think we would do well in attendance at Danzhuaz but not so sure in San Jose. I also know the two places will fill with differnt crowds. South bay with silicon burners and north with the city party people. I like the south bay buch becuase they show up with lots of creativity and a family feel. I like the north bay crowd becuase they come to let loose and make great fun.

we have three committed art projects:
    Mine ~murals
    J9's ~Butterfly
    Jane ~ uv paintings

we have a few light spinners and some door vollunteers
    We have all the blacklights

We have a pa system and potential other cool things like projection, strobe and some other art installments. etc.

DJ Prana has informed me he regretes not being in the area for this event.

and I have yet to recieve commitments from any other DJ's availible for that day.

So, while I still think we can pull this off, I'm worried that enough momentum hasn't started yet to make it a Blacklight Ball.

I am inclined to make it a Blacklight Party instead, where I find a place to invite about 60 people to have a night of fucko fun, blacklight dancing and crazy fun.

Mayby a toon Toon Town Disco party.

    • I just realized that this needs a face to face metting. I'll try to set one up in another thread.
      • dude...................... iIF the ball is in the south bay...................................... YOU TOTALLY HAVE ME AS A pr person....................................

I can rangle peeps to volunteer etc.

TRUST ME... ....................DO IT IN THE SOUTH BAY!!!

        i know djs as well!!
    • In SF, I have contact info for the Porn Palace. Although they are usually about $3500+. Possibly something smaller could be found, such as the Bayview Winery, or Haunted Barn. There's also the east bay, with places like Otherworld (would have to have people park remote, and buss them), or Nimby.

Are nightclubs out of the question? The Oasis in oakland is a very cheap place. 550 Barneveld is huge, and does have alot of openings, and is very reasonably priced for it's size. DNA Lounge...
      • I really like the porn Palace. I would love to start at least a dialouge with them, maby even if just for the future. All the others are also great suggestions. The problems with some of these places are simply the ceilings are to low to effectively hang much of the art. If it was just a party , most of them would be perfect, but it is an artshow/ dance celebration and I tend to try and make sure they both get served well.

I'm trying to stay away from nightclubs becuase so far, we have to give lots of royalty to the bars at an event where many people just don't drink a lot of alchohol (good thing in my book). Second, I hate the floors of most well used nightclubs. Makes for icky chill spaces. and thridly becuase many of them make us shut down at 2 or 3 in the morning. iT's not out of the question, but I perfere to start in a space that needs decorations verses redesign.

The East Bay (my orginal hometown) will be our next target area.

Starting the venue process over again means pushing our date back which would make sense for Aron so he could be there. That's one good thing right there.

        • The porn palace also either runs the bar themselves, and keeps all the profits, or requires the producer to get an ABC license, which usually means making connections with a non profit that has the capabilities of getting such a license, and giving them a share of the profits (traditionally 10%).

They also book several months in advance.

And of course, don't change anything for me. If I can't be there in person, I'll be there in spirit!
